Holiday Donations Needed!

Make a difference in the lives of women and children who are rebuilding their lives due to Domestic Violence.

We are collecting new and unwrapped donations of holiday presents for our clients to enjoy this holiday season. $40 gift cards to Target are the most needed items, and they can be mailed to AACI, c/o The Domestic Violence Program. Please see our holiday wish list for more details.

If you would like to run a donation drive for us, make a monetary donation, or donate your car, please contact us at dvdevelopment@aaci.org. Please note, donations remaining after the holidays will continue to be distributed to clients in the new year.

2010 National Domestic Violence Counts

These are the incredible results of a 24 hour census of Domestic Violence Shelters and Services conducted on September 15, 2010.

IN JUST ONE DAY:

1,746 participating local domestic violence programs in the United States and territories (91%)

Assisted 70,648 adults and children through shelter, transitional housing, and advocacy
Answered 22,292 hotline calls, over 16 calls every minute
Trained 30,134 attendees at 1,240 community education sessions

9,541 requests for services went unmet because of a lack of resources or staffing. 60% of the unmet requests were for emergency shelter or transitional housing and 40% of the unmet requests were for non-residential services.

As communities continue to experience job loss and decreased community resources, 1,441 (82%) programs reported a rise in demand for services, while at the same time, 1,351 (77%) of programs reported a decrease in funding.

Attorneys: Donate Your Legal Services to Help Victims of Domestic Violence

Asian Americans for Community Involvement’s Domestic Violence Program is looking for attorneys able to donate legal services, specifically in the area of family law and help with restraining order hearings. Our clients are abuse victims with few resources. Their abusive partners may have legal representation, may be more fluent in English and have lived in the US longer than their victims. As a result, the power and control dynamic and psychologically abusive behavior characteristic of domestic violence continues even after separation through the legal system. The greatest need is for legal representation at divorce and child custody hearings as well as restraining order hearings. Vietnamese and Mandarin-speaking attorneys are especially needed.
